How is the staffing ratio calculated?
Under section 1 of the Early Childhood Education Decree, a daycare needs one person in education, teaching and care tasks per four children under three, per seven children three and over in care more than five hours a day, and per thirteen children three and over in care five hours a day or less. The shares are added up and rounded up.
Who counts towards the ratio?
Staff in education, teaching and care tasks, such as early childhood education teachers, social pedagogues and childcare workers. Kitchen and cleaning staff, for example, do not count.
How many children may be in one group?
Under section 35 of the Early Childhood Education Act, a group may have at most as many children present at once as match the ratio for three educators, for example 21 full-day children three and over or 12 children under three. A child who needs support can reduce that number.
May the ratio be applied flexibly?
Yes, when the children's days are consistently clearly shorter than the daycare's opening hours. It may never be relaxed because staff are absent.
